Point by Paul Smith 09.11

Maharam introduces Point by Paul Smith, the sixth textile collaboration between the British fashion designer and the Maharam Design Studio. While Smith has explored families of related but unique stripes before, this series is distinguished by a fusion of construction and pattern. Dense rayon yarns in warp and weft are secured by a fine nylon binder, forming a gridded texture reminiscent of needlepoint embroidery or traditional grospoint transport cloth. Chosen for its clarity of color, this balanced construction highlights semi-lustrous rayon yarns in a wide array of rich hues including persimmon, mustard, loden, burnt sienna, and ultramarine. Each of the eleven variations employs eight individual hues.

A study in variegation, Point explores scale, density, rhythm, color, and proportion. All built from a single square unit, the seven geometric patterns range from traditional to modern in an imaginative display of Paul Smith’s signature “classics with a twist” style.

As one of the most successful fashion designers in British history, Paul Smith combines a flair for eccentric detail with a dedication to the highest standards of craftsmanship. A decade-long association with Maharam has yielded a rich collaborative effort in textiles for seating and, more recently, walls, as part of Maharam Digital Projects.

New York-based Maharam offers a comprehensive collection of textiles for contract and residential applications. Maharam textiles are available to the trade and at select retail locations in North America, through its Danish partner Kvadrat in Europe, and through Kvadrat Maharam in Sydney and Dubai.
