Fashion designer Paul Smith is globally revered for his creative spirit, enthusiasm for eclectic references, and unexpected combinations of pattern and color. Perspective, the twenty-third woven textile designed by Paul Smith for Maharam, was developed in response to paintings by the Chilean and Argentine architectural duo Pezo von Ellrichshausen.
An immersive pattern of perpendicular, intersecting, and diagonal lines, Perspective’s dynamic pattern is further articulated through color blending and varied woven textures. The design process presented both studios with an opportunity to reimagine classic geometric motifs—a focus of their joint creative work for nearly two decades.
Turret is a precisely woven graphic texture whose fine network of intersecting thick and thin fibers creates a dimensional surface. A tonal palette comprises cardinal, pale blue, indigo, sage, peach, and graphite.
Flip is a reversible privacy curtain whose staccato stripe alternates between fine bands of bright color and narrow lines of warp satin to form a rhythmic and refined composition.
An experiment in color theory, the blueprint for Photon’s abstract pattern was generated by an algorithm written by the artist. A meticulous grid and vivid geometric shapes were then hand-raced in pencil and painted in gentle sweeps of watercolor before being translated into digital form in collaboration with Maharam Digital Projects.
